Good morning šŸŒ¤ļø The Rolling Stones are releasing a new album next month, and their single "Angry", featuring Euphoriaā€™s Sydney Sweeney, was unveiled this past week. The band members are all over 76 years old, which: 1) doesnā€™t bode well for millennials dreaming of early retirement; 2) shutters our hopes for a certain president to hang his bulletproof hat; and 3) should make for a great conversation piece at dinner with the parents this week. Tell them to look at what their mates are doing.

Headlines

šŸ· Pharm to table

This is one of those stories that reinforces the idea that Uganda simply isnā€™t a real place. Apparently, farmers use Anti-Retroviral Drugs (ARVs) to fatten pigs and chickens. So naturally, upon this revelation, the National Drug Authority (NDA) and National Medical Stores (NMS) came under scrutiny from lawmakers. However, upon probing, officials from the NDA and NMS shocked parliamentarians by admitting the phenomenon goes back as far as 2013, and they kept mum about the issue so as not to ā€œcause alarm and panic to the economy.ā€ Despite this, pork sales show no sign of dropping.

ā˜• Brewing scandal

The way the money was spent was questionable (ā€¦). If such wasteful expenditure is not punished, government may soon ask for funds to teach Ugandans ā€˜how to use condomsā€˜.

Speaker Among

Your parents are at it again, stealing our money. The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, ordered an independent investigation into the mind-boggling Shs. 9.6 billion coffee literacy scheme orchestrated by the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) to ostensibly ā€˜teach Ugandans the fine art of coffee drinkingā€™. OPM, which was recently embroiled in the iron sheets scandal, handed over the contract to Inspire Africa (U) with promises of training youths in coffee production, erecting coffee shops, and building coffee empires. However, the Auditor General's report spilled the beans and revealed that the coffee shops were, in fact, ghost coffee shops.

šŸ’£ Terror alert

Security Agencies crashed a terrorist party after safely recovering and detonating six bombs and IEDs around Kampala. It is alleged that these incidents are terrorist attempts by the ADF to carry out retaliatory strikes against Kampala following military operations against them in the DRC. Subsequently, the president advised churches, bars, and other public places ā€˜not to allow strangersā€™ into their premises, and the U.S. Embassy issued a security alert, reminding U.S. citizens that the U.S. Department of Stateā€™s Travel Advisory for Uganda currently stands at Level 3 (Reconsider travel) for terrorism.

šŸ‡°šŸ‡Ŗ Kenya

Kenya banned Worldcoin activities for a year over security, privacy, and tax issues. To resume operations, Worldcoin must get approval from the Capital Markets Authority and pay income tax on income from cryptocurrency.

šŸ‡·šŸ‡¼ Rwanda

A man suspected of being a serial killer targeting women was arrested in Rwanda after authorities found 12 bodies buried in a house he rented. He was apprehended after refusing to pay rent and attempting to fight off local authorities.

šŸ‡¹šŸ‡æ Tanzania

Tanzania parked the bus proficiently to secure a spot in the AFCON Finals next January, crushing Algeriaā€™s perfect unbeaten record and Ugandaā€™s dreams of securing a spot in the tournament in the process.

No country should ever have to choose between development aspirations and climate action.

An excerpt from the Nairobi Declaration

ā›ˆ Harsh political weather. The first Africa Climate Summit in Nairobi had all the excitement of a picnic on a rainy dayā€”sparse progress and several dampened spirits.

Hereā€™s what you need to know:

  1. There was a call for a global carbon tax on fossil fuels, urgent restructuring of the way wealthier nations engage with Africa, and the need for more investment in the continent.

  2. African leaders urged the biggest polluters donors (the US and the EU) to fulfill their promise of $100 billion annually in climate finance to developing nations.

  3. The United Arab Emirates announced plans to invest $4.5 billion in Africa's clean energy potential.

  4. The United States announced key investments, including $30 million to support initiatives under the President's Emergency Plan for Adaptation and Resilience (PREPARE) in Africa.

  5. The Nairobi Declaration was issued, making a strong push for accelerated climate action and financing mechanisms, including debt restructuring and relief, and the development of a new Global Climate Finance Charter through the United Nations.

Overall, though the summit demonstrated Africa's active leadership in global climate action and aimed to transform the narrative around the continent from victim to assertive, wealthy partner, it was a summit with grand aspirations but about as much action as a slow-moving glacier.

šŸ‡²šŸ‡¦ Mourning in Morocco. A powerful 6.8 earthquake struck Morocco on Friday, killing more than 2,000 people and destroying buildings in the High Atlas Mountains and the historic city of Marrakech. The earthquake, which was the deadliest in Morocco since 1960, caused widespread damage to houses, mosques, and infrastructure and left many survivors homeless and devoid of food and water. The Moroccan government declared three days of national mourning and deployed rescue teams to provide aid to the affected areas.

šŸ‡®šŸ‡³ The G20 G21 Summit. The G20 Summit concluded in New Delhi, India, on Sunday, with diplomacy winning over hard stances. Hereā€™s what you need to know:

  1. Tripling renewable energy capacity: a new Global Biofuels Alliance (GBA) as part of a green energy push, while leaders reiterated a bid to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030.

  2. Inclusion of the African Union: The African Union was granted permanent membership in the Group of 20 largest economies.

  3. Softer language on the Ukraine war: Plenty of platitudes about the plight of the people of Ukraine, but no hard penalties for Russia.

  4. Overhauling institutions like the World Bank: The G20 leaders agreed on measures to expand lending by multilateral institutions like the World Bank

  5. Climate and energy: The summit addressed important issues such as food security, climate, and energy under the theme of "One Earth, One Family, One Future."

  6. Transport and trade: A new network of railway and sea routes linking India, Middle Eastern countries and Europe, backed by the U.S.

Although the Summit was considered a success by many, the omission of specific reference to Russia's aggression in Ukraine in the G20 summit declaration sparked criticism and controversy. Going forward, the Summit will continue to wrestle for relevance as new blocs like BRICS begin to flex and notable leaders, like Chinaā€™s Xi Jinping, shirk attendance.

šŸ’¶ Weight loss; financial gain. Instagram baddies sell flat tummy tea by the boatload, so imagine how much a drug that actually works would go for. Well, Novo Nordisk, the Danish drug company that makes weight-loss drugs Ozempic and Wegovy, recently became Europe's most valuable company, surpassing LVMH with a value of $428 billion. Novo Nordisk introduced Wegovy into the UK market (at a lower price point than in the US), resulting in a rise in their share prices and, subsequently, a boost in Denmark's economic growth forecast for the year.

šŸŽ No more Apple a day. You know that saying about two warring elephants and the grass beneath them? Replace the elephants with the US and China, and the ā€˜grassā€™ with Apple, Inc. Apple stock fell by almost $200 billion in two days after a Chinese ban on iPhone use by government officials spooked investors who are worried about Appleā€™s immunity to China-US tensions. China reportedly plans to expand the ban to state-owned companies, which could include millions of people. And it gets worse (for Apple): Huawei launched a new smartphone with advanced capabilities that the U.S. has attempted to restrict. The Mate 60 Pro is flying off the shelves in a country (China) that Apple depends on for nearly 20% of its sales.
